What skill would you suggest for effective collaboration?
The skill I would suggest the most would be respect. This not only goes for internet discussion but in person as well. When everyone has an equal opportunity to share their thoughts and receive feedback from others in collaboration, that is when ideas grow and group-work thrives.
My vote for most effective collaborative skill would be active listening…important to hear what the person is saying and what s/he is really saying. Questioning in a polite way would follow as a way to clear up or clarify what the person has said. Both as you already guessed demonstrate respect. Drop over to the cooperative learning site where we are giving teachers practical ideas for structuring cooperative groups.
Oops posted on the other discussion board but…Respect, flexibility, sense of humour, sincerity, willingness. Just to give you a sense of what I mean by willingness -Willingness to do, to participate, to negotiate, to enjoy, to learn…

Respect is an excellent choice.
